South China's Hainan Province is set to welcome a huge volume of holidaymakers amid a surge in bookings for trips during the upcoming Spring Festival holiday, according to Ctrip, the country's leading online travel agency.
A report released by the agency shows that travel bookings to Hainan for the upcoming holiday have soared by 392 percent year on year, with Sanya City included on the list of the top 10 popular destinations in China.
The demand for boutique hotels, with prices ranging from 400 to 500 yuan (about 56 to 69 U.S. dollars), in Haikou, the capital city of the island province, has been increasing steadily.
"The majority of tourists booking our rooms for the Spring Festival are from other provinces, and we anticipate an occupancy rate of up to 90 percent. We have already made preparations and will launch colorful activities," said Li Yangran, general manager of an international hotel in Haikou.
The holiday will also see the largest amount of Hainan residents embarking on an outbound trip since 2020. Among their preferred overseas destinations are Japan, Australia, Thailand, and Singapore.
The upcoming Spring Festival, or the Chinese Lunar New Year, falls on Feb 10, which will mark the Year of the Loong, also known as the Chinese dragon.
This year's holiday runs until Feb 17, one day longer than in previous years.
