Chinese e-commerce firm flourishes in US with abundant products, low prices 2024/2/10 source: Print

Temu, the latest Chinese shopping site, is taking the Internet by storm and attracting U.S. customers with a seemingly limitless range of products and low prices.

The online marketplace has quickly topped app charts in many countries, including the United States, launching there in 2022 and capturing more than half the U.S. market share of its closest rival, the fast fashion giant Shein, also Chinese-owned.

Eight-year-old Rose is a fan of online shopping, and its budget friendly-offerings. She and her elder sister Ella, aged 13, are among the millions of Americans buying inexpensive items, rapidly produced abroad, and supplied by companies like Temu, in response to the latest trends.

"Main things that you can buy are like clothing, maybe even sometimes like pillows and stuff like that, like blankets, maybe even makeup. Like everyday useful things. Like it's literally just, you can either get an APP on your phone or just search it up on like Google or Safari. And most the time they're really well organized and easy access and like cheap and all that stuff," said Ella.

With inflation still on the high side, Temu's appeal is clear. But lawmakers in Washington are expressing concern of the retailer's environmental impact and business practices.

"There are impacts on worker's rights and the amount of hours they work, the stress and conditions that they're under. The products are very inexpensive, so there have been allegations and talks about how are these workers even getting paid the proper amount or living wage," said Chana Rosenthal, founder of reDesign Consulting.

But all these accusations haven't stopped customers from embracing Temu's incredible deals. The company is spearheading a global economy supply chain, as the world of fast fashion and online commercialization is here to stay.
