EU slaps Apple with 1.8-bln-euro antitrust fine 2024/3/8 source: Print

The European Commission on Monday fined Apple 1.84 billion euros for breaching antitrust rules by restricting the business of its music streaming rivals on its App Store.

The move stems from Apple's alleged abuse of its dominant market position in distributing music streaming apps to iPhone and iPad users through its App Store, as stated in a European Commission statement.

Swedish streaming service company Spotify previously accused Apple of banning various applications from informing customers that there are other cheaper subscription music services outside the Apple App Store.

The penalty follows a March 2019 antitrust complaint by Spotify, which argued Apple's App Store rules purposely limit choice and hinder innovation at the expense of user experience and accused the tech giant of deliberately disadvantaging other app developers.
