As China leads the global electric vehicle (EV) market, smart driving technology continues to make significant strides.
BYD, a pioneer in the field, recently held an event in its Shenzhen headquarters showcasing its latest intelligent driving features. The company demonstrated how its vehicles can autonomously navigate obstacles, perform seamless lane changes, and even park remotely, all while maintaining safety and efficiency.

These advanced capabilities are not limited to luxury models. BYD's entry-level vehicles are also equipped with L2-level autonomous driving, making these technologies accessible to a broader market.

With the expanding adoption of AI-driven feature, BYD plans to boost its production of L2 vehicles to 4.4 million units by the end of 2024, a 70 percent increase from the previous year.

"We currently have 4.4 million vehicles, generating 72 million kilometers of [training data] daily. By the end of this year, we'll generate 150 million kilometers of [training data] per day. With this much data, we can iterate our models every seven days," said Yang Dongsheng, director of BYD's New Technology Research Institute.

Meanwhile, a growing number of Chinese automakers, including Geely and GAC, are integrating AI models like DeepSeek into their vehicles.

A research institute of an automaker based in Ningbo, Zhejiang, showcased how the adoption of large AI models enhance the user experience. An engineer sat in a car and told the AI assistant that he is tired, asking the AI assistant to wake him up later. It immediately understood the orders.

"Services inferred: 1. Close all windows. 2. Adjust driver's seat to 125-degree angle. 3. Set air conditioning to intelligent mode, 24°C, external circulation. 4. Set ambient light to yellow. 5. Schedule wake-up service in 35 minutes," the AI large language model responded and executed the moves.

According to the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, L2 autonomous vehicle penetration in China had already reached 55.7 percent in the first half of 2024. This figure is expected to exceed 65 percent in 2025, solidifying China's position as a leader in the smart driving revolution.
