China's software and information technology services industry delivered a strong performance in the first quarter of 2025, with steady revenue growth, double-digit profit increases, and a positive shift in exports, highlighting the sector's continued resilience, data from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology showed.
In the first quarter, software business revenue reached 3.15 trillion yuan (about 433 billion U.S. dollars), marking a 10.6 percent increase compared to the same period last year, the data revealed on Saturday.
The industry's total profit amounted to 372.6 billion yuan (over 51 billion U.S. dollars), up by 11.6 percent year on year. Software exports also turned positive, rising by 2.4 percent to 13.1 billion U.S. dollars.
Software product revenue grew steadily, totaling 753.6 billion yuan (about 104 billion U.S. dollars), up by 9.4 percent year on year, and accounting for 23.9 percent of total industry revenue.
Industrial software products saw 67.1 billion yuan (over 9.2 billion U.S. dollars) in revenue, growing by 7.1 percent, while basic software products generated 41.9 billion yuan (around 5.7 billion U.S. dollars), a 7.9 percent increase.
The information technology services sector maintained double-digit growth, with revenue rising by 11.0 percent to 2.08 trillion yuan (over 286 billion U.S. dollars) in the first quarter, comprising 66.1 percent of total industry revenue.
Cloud computing and big data services earned 354.0 billion yuan (about 49 billion U.S. dollars), up 11.1 percent year on year. Integrated circuit design revenue jumped 19.7 percent to 90.6 billion yuan (over 12 billion U.S. dollars), and e-commerce platform services saw an 8.4-percent increase, reaching 248.2 billion yuan (over 34 billion U.S. dollars).
The information security sector also showed robust growth, with revenue from products and services rising by 8.6 percent to 48.1 billion yuan (over 6.6 billion U.S. dollars). However, embedded system software revenue grew at a slower pace, reaching 264.2 billion yuan (over 36 billion U.S. dollars), up by 10.5 percent year on year.
Regionally, the eastern, central, western, and northeastern regions saw growth rates of 10.6 percent, 11.8 percent, 9.9 percent, and 10.9 percent, respectively. The eastern region alone accounted for 84.2 percent of the total national software business revenue.
Other key regions, such as the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region in the north and the Yangtze River Delta in the east, posted growth rates of 11.8 percent and 10.4 percent, respectively.
The top five regions for software business revenue -- Beijing, Guangdong, Jiangsu, Shandong, and Shanghai -- saw year-on-year growth rates ranging from around 8 percent to 14 percent. Specifically, Beijing grew by 11.8 percent, Guangdong by 8.2 percent, Jiangsu by 10.0 percent, Shandong by 12.4 percent, and Shanghai by 14.1 percent.
