LOS ANGELES, May 25 (Xinhua) -- "Lilo & Stitch," a live-action reimagining of Disney's 2002 animated classic, opened atop the North American box office with an estimated 145.5 million U.S. dollars in its first three days, according to data released Sunday by measurement firm Comscore.
Directed by award-winning filmmaker Dean Fleischer Camp, the film is a wildly funny and deeply touching tale of a lonely Hawaiian girl and a fugitive alien who helps mend her broken family.
Internationally, the family comedy film also took in 158.7 million dollars over the weekend.
"Lilo & Stitch" holds a 69 percent approval rating based on 151 reviews on the review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes. It also received an "A" grade from audiences polled by market research firm CinemaScore, which uses a standard scale from A+ to F.
Another newcomer, Paramount's action thriller "Mission: Impossible -- The Final Reckoning," starring Tom Cruise, debuted in second place with 63 million dollars.
Rounding out the top three, Warner Bros. Pictures and New Line Cinema's horror film "Final Destination Bloodlines" generated 19.7 million dollars in its second weekend, bringing its North American total to 89.8 million dollars.
