Qingdao prides itself on its remarkable strength in marine pharmaceutical research. Qingdao is now home to more than 50 innovation platforms at different levels, and has set up dedicated teams to study marine biopharmaceutical resources, which are headed by academicians, and mainly consist of national level youth personnel and provincial level Taishan talent project title winners. A total number of over 6,000 researchers across the city study marine pharmaceuticals and biological products. Qingdao has helped BGI Genomics Northern China Center to establish the world’s largest comprehensive marine gene library, where more than one thousand newly structured natural marine products have been discovered successively, accounting for one third of China’s total and one tenth of the global total.
