Qingdao is strengthening its role as a hub for China-Europe freight trains by integrating transport, industry and trade as the city works to turn international logistics flows into broader industrial and commercial opportunities.

A new Belt and Road agricultural product distribution center was recently established at the Qingdao hub of the Jinan-Qingdao China-Europe Railway Express consolidation center. Combining rail transport, bonded warehousing, cross-border trade and supply-chain services, the center has already handled more than 200,000 metric tons of agricultural products.

It will focus on bulk commodities such as grain, feed ingredients and plant proteins, linking overseas sourcing with customs clearance, bonded storage, distribution and domestic sales. The facility is expected to become the region's first large-scale, specialized cross-border agricultural product distribution platform offering full-chain services.

Qingdao has also developed new models combining freight train services with bonded logistics and international trade. Under these arrangements, exporters can store goods in bonded zones, receive tax rebates earlier and schedule shipments more flexibly in line with overseas orders and train departures.

The services are also becoming more closely linked with local manufacturing. In the first half of 2026, supply-chain trains operating through the China-SCO Local Economic and Trade Cooperation Demonstration Area transported 7,118 twenty-foot equivalent units of home appliances for export, up 62.9 percent year-on-year.

Moving forward, Qingdao plans to further expand dedicated train services, improve links with Eurasian markets and deepen coordination with sectors such as home appliances and equipment manufacturing, advancing its shift from a logistics corridor to a broader economic corridor.
