Progress on the tunnel boring for the Chunfeng Tunnel in Luohu District has reached 3,409 meters, accounting for approximately 94.7% of the total underground project, according to sources from the Shenzhen Municipal Transport Bureau on Tuesday.

Boring work for the tunnel is expected to be completed in March, and the tunnel is expected to become operational before the end of the year.

The 5.08-kilometer project connects Binhe Road in the west and Xinxiu Overpass over Yanhe Road South in the east. It comprises open-road segments in the east and west that are connected by a 3.6-kilometer underground section in the middle.

For tunneling work, the contractor has employed a large slurry shield machine, measuring 135 meters in length and 15.8 meters in diameter, developed in-house. This specialized equipment facilitates daily progress of approximately 5 meters.

Located approximately 20 meters underground, the tunnel will be the city's first single-bore tunnel featuring a double-deck interior. Each level will accommodate three lanes designated for either westbound or eastbound traffic, with two lanes allocated for regular traffic and one continuous lane reserved for emergency parking. A speed limit of 60 kilometers per hour will be enforced.

Upon completion of this major infrastructure project, the tunnel will double the transportation capacity along this segment of Chunfeng Road and greatly improve traffic flow at Chunfeng Overpass in south Luohu.
