A STROLL, run, or bike ride can quickly be thwarted by unfavorable weather, but the Xiwan-Qianhai Bay Slow Traffic Public Space offers a comfortable and sheltered route for outdoor enthusiasts. Spanning 6 kilometers from Jinwan Boulevard in the north to the Coastal Cultural Park in Bao’an District in the south, this route allows joggers and cyclists to appreciate scenic views of Qianhai Bay regardless of weather conditions thanks to the overhead Guangzhou-Shenzhen Riverside Expressway bridge.

Occupying a vast expanse of 440,000 square meters, this public space incorporates dedicated lanes for both walking and biking. It plays a pivotal role in connecting the green spaces of Xiwan and Qianhai, and nearby communities — a connection that was once hindered by undeveloped land. Facilities such as restrooms, exercise areas, and ecological education stations have been thoughtfully placed along these lanes to enhance the experiences of visitors.

Part of the wider Mountain-Sea Vista Initiative of Shenzhen, the public space aims to integrate the western regions of Bao’an with coastal areas like the Coastal Culture Park. Tailored to the diverse needs of individuals of all ages, the route features a variety of amenities designed to enrich the outdoor experience.

As of January this year, Shenzhen had completed a 420-km hiking trail network that spans from the Bao’an coast to the mountains of Dapeng. This network has three main trails — Kunpeng Trail, Fenghuang Trail, and Cuiwei Trail. It also includes three loop routes — Mt. Yangtai Circular Route, Mt. Maluan Circular Route, and Shanshui Route. These trails forge a seamless connection between five mountains, country parks, reservoirs, and sites of historical and cultural significance, facilitating effortless access to nature for residents.

By the end of 2025, Shenzhen will complete the construction of an extensive park system and the backbone of a trail network. This will encompass 1,350 parks and a greenway network extending over 4,000 kilometers, all dedicated to promoting outdoor activities and offering an escape into the tranquility of nature.
