CUHK-SHENZHEN aims to become a first-class international research university by 2035, its president Xu Yangsheng said at a ceremony marking the university’s 10th anniversary in Longgang District on Saturday afternoon.

Xu emphasized the role of inclusiveness and innovation in developing the university, the first cooperative university in Shenzhen approved by the Ministry of Education.

He stated that inclusiveness will ensure the creation of a global community with a shared future while innovation produces new quality productive forces. By focusing on these two principles, the university will be able to cultivate top talent.

Xu attributed the university’s success over the past 10 years to five key aspects.

The university has constructed four major disciplines based on the national development strategy and the talent needs of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA).These disciplines are economics and finance, computer data science, materials chemistry, and biomedicine. So far, the quality of the four disciplines has reached or approached a world-class level.

Second, the university has established and implemented academic management and talent evaluation systems to ensure that the level and academic quality of professors stand at the forefront of world-class universities.

The university has recruited 655 internationally renowned scholars from around the world including five Nobel Prize winners and over 40 academicians. All the professors have study and work experience at world-class universities.

The third aspect concerns the quality of its students. CUHK-Shenzhen’s students have had the highest scores in Guangdong Province on gaokao, China’s national college entrance exam. Furthermore, approximately 80% of graduates chose to further their studies, with 71% attending the world’s top 50 universities.

The average annual salary of graduates who entered the job market after graduation was 170,800 yuan (US$23,621), and more than half of them chose to work in the GBA.

The fourth important aspect is that the university has inherited the college system and whole-person education philosophy of The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK). CUHK-Shenzhen has established seven colleges that break the boundaries of academic disciplines and bring together students from different academic majors and cultural backgrounds.

Lastly, the university has formed close interactions with society and encouraged social participation in running the school. It has jointly built over 20 laboratories and research institutes with enterprises.
