NEW graduates and Chinese students who have recently returned from studying overseas can now apply for Shenzhen hukou, or household registration, through an online application system that was officially launched yesterday.

The system allows the application process to be completed in as little as 30 minutes, thanks to the collaborative efforts of the city’s human resources, public security, development and reform, and administrative data authorities.

Applicants can access the service via the iShenzhen App, the WeChat account “深圳人社,” or by logging into www.gdzwfw.gov.cn, the official website of the Guangdong administrative service, to upload the necessary documents, according to a notice issued by the Shenzhen Municipal Human Resources and Social Security Bureau.

In May 2018, Shenzhen introduced an online approval service for college graduates and extended it to various categories of talent in April 2019. However, technical challenges and information silos among different departments prevented the service from being fully realized. Previously, graduates who obtained the hukou transfer qualification needed to go back to their hometown to transfer the hukou to Shenzhen. Although an online service for hukou transfer was made available nationwide in 2023, applicants still had to submit printed materials to the police department, making the process take at least one week.

The new one-stop online service enhances efficiency by reducing repetitive applications and discrepancies and simplifying application procedures.
