Windy Shao windysjf@hotmail.com LEGENDARY American driver Robby Gordon captivated spectators at the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area International Auto Show yesterday with a display of jumps, precision drifts, and gravity-defying two-wheel maneuvers that elicited resounding applause at the Shenzhen World Exhibition & Convention Center in Bao’an District. Gordon, expressing his excitement for the diverse array of offerings at the auto show, jokingly suggested a test drive in a BYD off-road vehicle. “Let’s select the BYD [vehicle]. Bring it right over here. Let’s jump it,” the motorsports icon told Shenzhen Daily just before his thrilling showcase of skills at the speed zone outside of Hall 2, where his Speed UTVs are displayed. “It’s been raining out here, so I was able to look around at the show more for the last two hours, and I’ve seen a lot of really nice electric cars,” the driver and co-founder of Speed UTV said of the auto show. Regarding the development of electric off-road vehicles, Gordon pondered the practicality of incorporating hybrid engines to navigate regions lacking robust infrastructure for electric charging. He also underscored the importance of sustainability, raising questions about the long-term implications of battery usage. Hailing from a renowned racing family, Gordon offered words of encouragement to the younger generation of Chinese racers. Citing his recent participation in the Taklimakan Rally, he said, “There were many good drivers there. I was very impressed. I think there are a lot of opportunities for Chinese drivers.” Throughout Gordon’s illustrious career, he is known for his aggressive driving style and was even dubbed “crazy” by outsiders. However, the icon, known as one of the most versatile drivers in the world, does not think so. “I think I’m not crazy. I can control crazy. What I’ve learned is how to control speed, have fun, and create an exciting brand,” the driver said. Speed UTV, known for the affordability and performance of its vehicles, has gained popularity in the United States and is making its mark in Chinese races. Gordon sees immense potential in China’s robust automotive industry and burgeoning motorsports market.
