AROUND 500 mountaineering enthusiasts and entrepreneurs, including several who have summited Mount Qomolangma (Mt. Everest), gathered at Biosphere 3 in Yantian District on Sunday for the Beyond the Summit 2024 event to reflect on how their passion for climbing has influenced their lives.

During the event, Cao Jun, vice president of the Shenzhen Mountaineering and Outdoor Sports Association, unveiled the latest data on Qomolangma climbing. He said that since the end of the 2024 climbing season, 15 climbers from Shenzhen had successfully reached the summit, setting a record for the highest number of climbers from the city to achieve this feat. Currently, a total of 61 individuals from Shenzhen have collectively summited the peak 70 times.

Wang Jian, the 70-year-old chairman and co-founder of BGI, led a scientific team to the summit last month, setting a new record as the oldest Chinese climber to accomplish this feat.

Wang plans to move more scientific instruments to higher altitudes and organize survival challenges for humans in extreme conditions. He believes that these initiatives will contribute positively to future scientific advancements, Mars exploration, and the study of extraterrestrial life.

Wang Shi, founder and chairman of China Vanke, stressed that the spirit of climbing and the willingness to face challenges are deeply ingrained in the temperament of Shenzhen.

“The number of climbers from Shenzhen who have conquered Qomolangma ranks highest among cities worldwide with more than 10 million inhabitants. The climbing culture of Shenzhen, much like its economic development, stands at the forefront among cities in China,” he said.
