THE 5th Shenzhen Global Artificial Intelligence (AI) Expo is an ideal opportunity for people, no matter whether they are self-described techies or luddites, to gain a deeper understanding of AI and its functionalities.

The expo at the Shenzhen Convention and Exhibition Center in Futian District, which will end today, is showcasing the latest trends and technologies in AI. Recognized as China’s first professional expo to cover the entire AI ecosystem, it features more than 30 events and forums and is expected to attract over 60,000 professionals.

At the venue, a dynamic interaction between a “Bumblebee” cosplayer and a bipedal robot captivated onlookers. The bipedal robot, which can skillfully maneuver, is from Engine AI, a promising startup focused on the development of humanoid robots. Engine AI was founded in 2013 and is based in Nanshan District.

Engine AI’s robot, primarily used for research in institutes and universities, can perform complex actions, such as running and jumping, and has industry-leading, human-like levels of dynamic ability. According to Yao Aiwen, an employee of the company, Engine AI plans to release a humanoid robot similar to Tesla’s Optimus and is working on a product suitable for home use.

Another standout attraction is Dobot’s robotic arms, which can masterfully create detailed latte art. Dobot, a Shenzhen-based firm, was founded in 2015. Wang Heru, the company’s market planning manager, said that with less than two hours of training, the robotic arms can be applied in various tasks, including chopping, folding clothes, and inserting straws into beverage bottles. Wang said the company has established subsidiaries in Japan, the United States, and Germany.

Chintan Kudale, from India, told Shenzhen Daily that he was in the city specifically for the AI expo. “I’m particularly interested in AI products like robots that can update themselves, as well as new innovations in the industry that I might not yet know about,” said Kudale, who runs several businesses and hopes to expand into AI.
