AROUND 30 expats and local residents took part in the Mid-Autumn Impressions event Thursday, which was held at the Tianxin Community Service Center in Sungang Subdistrict, Luohu District, to celebrate the Mid-Autumn Festival, which falls on Tuesday.

One of several Mid-Autumn events organized by the Luohu District International Block, the event began with a quiz on Mid-Autumn Festival customs.

The event reached its peak during an art session in which participants tried their hand at the ancient Chinese art of ink rubbing. Originating from the desire to preserve and share information on bronze and stone artifacts, Chinese ink rubbing is a simple yet effective method for copying historical information.

During the event, Peter Rohner, a Swiss expat who currently lives in Luohu District, tried Chinese ink rubbing for the first time and said it was a fascinating experience. “I’m not particularly patient by nature, so I believe that ink rubbing is a great way for me to concentrate,” he said.

Event attendees also sampled various types of mooncakes, the most iconic food associated with the Mid-Autumn Festival. Alka Gupta, from India, said that as a vegetarian, she enjoys the Suzhou-style mooncake best since it isn’t too sweet.
