A DELEGATION from Cork, Ireland, arrived in Shenzhen on Thursday to delve into the city’s thriving research and innovation ecosystem.

Led by former Lord Mayor of Cork Kieran McCarthy, the delegation visited the Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech), Huawei, and PCH International on Friday. The purpose of the visit, according to McCarthy, is to gain insight into the cutting-edge research and innovation happening in Shenzhen, particularly in urban development and academic research.

McCarthy, who visited Shenzhen for the first time, was impressed by the advanced innovation cluster at SUSTech’s School of Design. “The work being done here not only benefits China but has a global impact on improving people’s lives,” he noted.

He was particularly struck by the rapid development of the campus, which was built in just over a decade and exemplifies a pace of progress uncommon in Western Europe.

McCarthy’s impression of Shenzhen was one of a vibrant and friendly city, distinct from Hong Kong and recognized for its commitment to addressing global issues.

Both Cork and Shenzhen are recognized as hubs of scientific innovation — Cork in Europe and Shenzhen as the Silicon Valley of China. McCarthy sees potential for both cities to enhance cooperation, especially in areas like education, life sciences, and startups. “There’s always a challenge in starting up a company, and we can learn from each other’s experiences,” he said.
