A well-preserved ancient village in east China's Jiangxi Province has become a hot tourist destination for its rich and diverse traditional architecture.
Yiqian Village is located in Guangchang County in east China's Jiangxi Province, which is famous for lotus cultivation, according to Wu Guangchang, a middle school teacher from Yiqian Village.
"The tradition of lotus cultivation in Guangchang County spans over 1,300 years, and there are families that have flourished here for even longer," said Wu.
He said his ancestors migrated more than four centuries ago from the eastern foothills to the western foothills of the Wuyi Mountains, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and has lived in Yiqian Village ever since then.
Wu said a post office has stood in his village for a long time, giving Yiqian Village, which means "the village in front of a post house”, its name.
Located along the southern banks of the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River, China's longest river, Jiangxi Province is blessed with an extensive water network centered on the Poyang Lake and the Ganjiang River. This fertile landscape has long made it a good place for farming. As a result, Jiangxi boasts well-preserved ancient towns, with over 400 of them on China's list of traditional sites, according to Wu.
"This is a boat-shaped house with column-and-tie construction," Wu said while leading a group of visitors on a tour of his village.
The ancient buildings in Yiqian are arranged in sequence along the flowing direction of the river, demonstrating the unique charm of water towns in China.
"This is Kui Bi Lianhui, known locally as Qijin Tingtang, which is a typical ancient architecture in Yiqian Village. The three carvings are quite exquisite," Wu said while showing visitors the ancient building.
The buildings in Yiqian are all in different styles, giving this place its unique cultural charm.
"The courtyard in the ancient house is a key open area that allows for light, drainage, and ventilation. When viewed from above, the concentric squares look like the Chinese character 'hui', which means returning. It is a reminder that wherever you go, always remember to come back home," Wu said as his tour group visited another stunning ancient dwelling.
