The Washington-based Chinese American Museum on Sunday held an opening ceremony for a Buddhist cultural exhibition that showcased various vegetarian diets and exquisite religious artworks from a renowned millennium-old temple in Shanghai.
Over 200 Buddhism followers and political representatives attended the ceremony, with the ambassadors of 10 countries to the U.S. including Jamaica, Thailand, and Cameroon attending the event.
Buddhist Mater Zhao Cheng, abbot of the Longhua Temple, a 1700-year-old Shanghai-based pilgrimage site and the source of the show's exhibits, said at the opening ceremony that the event was thoughtfully designed and was intended to establish harmonious bonds between visitors through Buddha's compassion and wisdom.
"The Buddhist culture and art exhibition held at our museum this time presents four themes as designed by the Master Zhao Cheng. The main theme is 'a happy meeting with Longhua Temple', and the sub-themes are about cultural and creative products, dharma, calligraphy and painting, as well as vegetarian diets, which are all very much expected," said Qiu Feili, the founder of Chinese American Museum.
The museum is dedicated to raising social awareness, representation, and understanding of Chinese culture in the U.S. in an attempt to change the embarrassed situation faced by Chinese Americans, who said that their culture has long been underrepresented and misunderstood in the American society.
"Since 2017, when the museum was established, we have been working under our founding cause of contributing our efforts to break the barriers between different cultures. As we have been rolling out events over these years, we felt that Chinese culture is becoming more and more popular among Americans," said Qiu. ?
