MACAO -- A family of giant pandas, living happily in China's Macao Special Administrative Region for almost ten years, have captivated the hearts of visitors and significantly contributed to the region's tourism industry.
This year marks a decade since Macao received its beloved pandas, Kai Kai and Xin Xin, a pair of giant pandas chosen from Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding in southwest China's Sichuan Province as a gift to Macao in 2015. When put together, the names of these two bears means "happiness."
The following year, they gave birth to twin brothers Jian Jian and Kang Kang, whose names together mean "good health."
These furry ambassadors have drawn tourists from around the globe to the Macao Giant Panda Pavilion.
"It just feels special Macao actually has a giant panda pavilion! No huge crowds, you can visit anytime. For locals, it's an amazing opportunity," said Loi Chio I, a local visitor.
"I'm from Brazil and it's a great pleasure to be here because these giant pandas are amazing creatures. How they move, how they are gentle and at the same time they are so strong," said Antonio Henrique Neves Ramos, a Brazilian visitor.
I came from Poland and we used visa-free transfer here from to Macao. We are very happy to see the pandas in here. It's a very good pleasure for us," said Maksym Niewczyk, a visitor from Poland.
The Macao Giant Panda Pavilion welcomed over 300,000 visitors last year alone, and with China's visa-free transit policy in place, international tourism continues to grow.
"The giant panda is widely recognized as China's national treasure. That's why many tourists from other regions come to Macao specifically to see them. It also serves as a great platform to promote Macao's cultural tourism and showcase Chinese culture to the world," said Chan Hoi Fong, division chief of Macao's Municipal Affairs Bureau.
