The Shapotou scenic spot, located in the vast expanse of desert in northwest China's Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, is embracing its peak tourism season as summer vacation is approaching.

Literally meaning "high sand dunes," Shapotou is a place where the Tengger Desert and the Yellow River meet.
Although hot during the day, Shapotou's temperature drops quickly after dark, making it a fine place to chill on a summer evening.
In the heart of the Tengger Desert, a variety of camping bases to meet needs of different tourists, like white pearls, are set in the sea of sand.
"The service is quite good, and the place is very popular. For me the experience as a customer, including dining, accommodation and entertainment, is quite good," said Yang Lizhi, a tourist from north China's Hebei Province.
"I think they are very seasoned in developing tourism. All the services that should be there are there, and they are provided by a quality staff," said Chen Wanling, a tourist from southwest China's Yunnan Province.
In the day, tourists can enjoy various fun activities from riding off-road vehicles to traditional sand sliding on the desert.
"I really want to come and apply for a driver position. How great it must be to drive a vehicle here every day. Just going through these slopes is really enjoyable," said Li Jiangbiao, a tourist from northwest China's Shaanxi Province.
In the evening, the tranquil desert invites tourists to sit under a starry sky and experience the immensity of nature. Lectures are also available for tourists to learn about the stars.
"Today, I took my child to go sand sliding. Just now, we listened to a lecture on the starry sky. Besides playing, my child also learned some knowledge about the Earth we live on and the universe beyond our planet. Meanwhile, we can climb up and down sand slopes to feel the vastness of the desert," said Wang Ziwei, a tourist from Beijing.
