The Jiangsu Provincial City Football League, a grassroots sports event that has gone viral on Chinese social media, witnessed its highest attendance on Saturday as almost 37,000 fans roared from the stands to support their teams in a rain-soaked match between the winless Changzhou and the league-leading Nanjing.
Dubbed the 'Su Super League', the amateur tournament featuring 13 teams -- each representing a city in east China's Jiangsu Province -- has stirred football fever across China, with online viewership soaring into the hundreds of millions.
With matches running from May through to November, the amateur championship has now entered its fourth round as the competition heats up through the summer.
In Saturday's match between Changzhou and Nanjing, the single-match attendance reached 36,712, with over 10,000 spectators from outside the province, shattering the league's previous record attendance set by the Xuzhou-Zhenjiang showdown.
Despite being made up mostly of semi-professional and amateur players, the matches have generated an electric atmosphere, attracting passionate fans who follow their teams on the road.
"Our Suqian's players have maintained a spirit of perseverance, never giving up. We truly saw several well-played attempts that, unfortunately, did not result in goals," said a fan after a match between Yancheng City and Suqian City concluded on Saturday evening.
"The outcome of the match doesn't matter that much; they will always be the best in our hearts," another fan named Zhao Shuai said.
