SACRAMENTO – Governor Gavin Newsom announced new funding initiatives designed to expand access to prefabricated and modular housing for survivors of the Los Angeles fires. This strategic investment aims to drastically reduce rebuilding timelines while ensuring that new structures honor the unique architectural design and character of affected neighborhoods.
The success of these factory-built solutions is already visible in communities like Palisades and Altadena, where residents who opted for modular housing have already moved back into their finished homes.
Under the Governor’s executive orders to cut red tape, local agencies have approved 3,000 rebuilding permits at a rate approximately three times faster than pre-fire benchmarks. By integrating factory-built housing into the recovery strategy, the state is providing a high-quality, efficient path home for displaced families.
A primary focus of this new funding is the maintenance of community aesthetics. Unlike "cookie-cutter" temporary fixes, these prefabricated options were designed specifically for Los Angeles communities. They allow for customization that aligns with the specific styles and historical character of recovering neighborhoods.
Survivors can explore these expedited housing options through the state’s Rebuilding Tool, launched in direct partnership with LA Rises.
As California continues to invest in public safety and disaster resilience, these prefabricated solutions represent a new standard for modern, efficient, and community-centered disaster recovery.
