A colorful carnival was staged ahead of the upcoming summer festival season in Scotland's capital city on Sunday, with a Chinese parade team impressing locals with their energetic and eye-catching performances.
More than 800 people from dozens of countries and regions brought their talents to the Edinburgh Festival Carnival, with the sound of bagpipes being joined by unique music and culture from all around the world.
The largest parade team was formed by 280 overseas Chinese community members, who displayed a series of dynamic dragon and lion dances, folk and modern dance, and even some martial arts. The elegant demeanor of Chinese culture caught the attention of attendees and won applause from local spectators.
"[The performances were] fabulous, very colorful, and really nice. We love the dragons, we really liked the dragons. The dragons and the ladies all looked beautiful. Beautiful costumes and lovely colors. We really liked it,” said a resident.
The carnival first appeared on Edinburgh's streets back in 2012 as a way of kicking off the main summer festival season which culminates in the Edinburgh International Festival (EIF), which is typically held every August.
The EIF was established in 1947 in the aftermath of World War II and features a celebration of music, theater, opera and dance, and the performing arts.
