Residents and visitors in Chengdu of southwest China's Sichuan Province have bid farewell to the 31st FISU World University Games with fond memories.
After 12 days of thrilling athletic competitions at the Chengdu Universiade, a splendid closing ceremony was held with a gala performance "Dreams: Lighting Up the Future" which features originally-written songs and dances, receiving enthusiastic applause from the spectators at the Open Air Music Park on Tuesday evening.
Outside the park, many people were seen watching the dazzling fireworks display of the closing ceremony from a distance.
"I am one of the most honored Chongqing people. I came to Chengdu from Chongqing with no regrets because many people only feel the closing ceremony on TV. But now I'm just outside the park where the ceremony is being held. It’s so fantastic to share the joy with so many Chengdu residents here. My friend here also introduced me to the main venue of the FISU Games, the Dong'an Lanke Sports Park, and I saw the torch there. I felt it symbolizes the youth of the university students. The events end soon, but I don't think the spirit of sports and the youth will end. They will always be there," said Xue Danling, a tourist from Chongqing
"The fireworks display was in good time as there is now a little drizzle and the display was accompanied by thunder, which symbolizes it was hard for residents to farewell the FISU Games. I miss the friendship and spirit the athletes demonstrated, no matter where they are from," said Xie Zhiqian a high school student.
The Chengdu Universiade stands out as it was the first international multi-sport event held in China after the pandemic and also provided a stage for a total of around 6,500 student-athletes from 113 countries and regions to excel, exchange goodwill and establish friendships.
As of August 8, all 269 medal events have been decided, with host China topping the list with 103 gold medals followed by Japan and South Korea. Countries like India and Iran also achieved breakthroughs in specific events.
The baton has now been passed to Germany, which will host the 2025 FISU World University Games.
