Color grading, as the narrative expression and emotional rendering of films, plays an important role and is an indispensable link in film creation. An excellent film colorist is the soul figure of this creative stage, or the hero behind the scenes. Recently, we have interviewed Mr. Yi Jun, a senior colorist who has color grading experience of over 10 years, having a discussion on technical skills used by Mr. Yi in his recent completed color grading work on the film Lost Girl2023.

Lost Girl tells a story of each person striving to survive and change the current situation in the torrent of fate, as well as different dilemmas of each character intertwined with different fates.

“With a total length of 102 minutes and approximately 660 shots, Lost Girl is a test of both my color grading skills and working efficiency. I completed all the DI workflow, including data management, matching confirm, image look design, formal color grading, modification, and even post production of DCP. The processing time was approximately 3 weeks, and the color grade system I used was DaVinci Reslove 18.1,” said Mr. Yi.

Besides the tight schedule for the colorist, the complicated spatio-temporal relationship of the film “Lost Girl” is another major difficulty. “To distinguish various spatio-temporal paragraphs, including the present spatio-temporal, the past spatio-temporal, the far paster spatio-temporal, as well as the protagonist's dreams, etc., I used different color looks in different paragraphs ,” Mr. Yi recalled.

From Mr. Yi’s perspective, the entire process of color grading in the movie Lost Girl is a joyful creative process. In terms of the design and technical implementation of the image style, the main creative department has given the color grading department a lot of creative space. “Colorist can make many technical attempts based on the actual material, the expression demands of the film, and the technical implementation methods, and ultimately obtain an image look that meets the plot and creator's needs. I hope there will be more opportunities in the future to provide color grading services for such excellent films, and I also hope that the audience can enjoy this film and wish it good luck,” Mr. concluded.
