China's daily box office exceeded 500 million yuan (about 69.73 million U.S. dollars) on Saturday, the highest single-day box office during the summer season in nearly three years, according to data from 1905.com -- a Chinese streaming video website owned by CCTV-6, the largest movie channel in China.
This extraordinary achievement came after 187 days after the Chinese Lunar New Year holiday.
The data showed that the single-day box office approached 506 million yuan (about 70.56 million U.S. dollars), with the three most popular movies -- "No More Bets", "Meg 2: The Trench", and "Creation of the Gods 1: Kingdom of Storms" -- each generating over 100 million yuan (about 13.95 million U.S. dollars) in box office revenue on that momentous day.
Chinese crime movie "No More Bets" raked in a staggering 175 million yuan (about 24.40 million U.S. dollars); the science fiction action film "Meg 2: The Trench" garnered 128 million yuan (about 17.85 million U.S. dollars); and "Creation of the Gods 1: Kingdom of Storms", a movie based on well-known Chinese classical fantasy novel, made 104 million yuan (about 14.50 million U.S. dollars).
