Top seed Lin cruises into last 16 at table tennis worlds 2025/5/20 source: Print

DOHA, May 20 (Xinhua) -- Top-seeded Lin Shidong got the better of Hong Kong player Lam Siu Hang in the men's singles third round to reach last 16 at the World Table Tennis Championships here on Tuesday.

It was a textbook performance from the world No. 1 Chinese as he triumphed 11-9, 11-6, 11-4, 11-6 over 30 minutes.

Earlier in mixed doubles action, Lin paired up with Kuai Man as the top seeds to secure a 3-0 (11-2, 11-3, 11-6) demolition of Austria's Robert Gardos and Sofia Polcanova.

Third-seeded Brazilian Hugo Calderano, who claimed the World Cup by beating Lin in the final, also won his singles third round game, defeating Tunisia's Wassim Essid 11-5, 11-3, 11-5, 11-4 in just 23 minutes.

Chinese Liang Jingkun, the fifth seed, overcame an early setback to beat Portugal's Joao Geraldo 5-11, 11-7, 11-3, 11-8, 11-8, while his compatriot Lin Gaoyuan, seeded 16th, whitewashed Argentina's Horacio Cifuentes 11-4, 11-9, 11-2, 13-11.

Fourth-seeded Japanese Tomokazu Harimoto had met stiff challenge from Manav Thakkar before he nipped the Indian in six sets (13-11, 11-3, 9-11, 11-6, 9-11, 11-3).
