THE HAGUE, April 16 (Xinhua) -- After an impressive solo effort of around 29 kilometers, Tadej Pogacar won the Dutch cycling classic Amstel Gold Race on Sunday in the southern Dutch province of Limburg.

The 24-year-old Slovenian, winner of the Tour de France in 2020 and 2021, showed his hunger for success with several attacks in the race over 253 kilometers and 33 hills from Maastricht to Berg en Terblijt.

With 90 kilometers remaining, the UAE Emirates frontman was part of a leading group of eleven riders. Pogacar suffered some delay with a flat tire but then slowly thinned the group with accelerations and drove away from the rest on the Keutenberg to stay alone in the final half hour.

In the absence of Mathieu van der Poel (winner in 2019) and Wout van Aert (winner in 2021), the 57th edition of the Amstel Gold Race got the major favorite as the winner. Two weeks ago, Pogacar won the Belgian classic Tour of Flanders.
