XISHUANGBANNA -- An adorable video shows a group of wild Asian elephants rolling around and playing in water in the Xishuangbanna National Nature Reserve in southwest China's Yunnan Province.
The video was shot by cameras set up by staff members of the nature reserve. In the cute video, the elephants can be seen having a great time in the water.
Some of them used their long noses to spray water on their body, some lay in the water and rolled around in different gestures, and some shook their big ears, splashing water all over the river.
"It is a nature of elephants to play in the water. More importantly, elephants can't live without water. By playing in the water or taking baths, they can keep healthy and cool their body temperatures down. Besides, they can obtain many vitamins and microelements from water. The mud is also good for them, which will help their digestion and meet their other needs. In recent years, we have often spotted or photographed elephants in the wild due to our increased efforts to protect the animal," said Shen Qingzhong, member of the expert committee for Asian elephants at the National Forestry and Grassland Administration.
Xishuangbanna is the main habitat for wild Asian elephants in China, and through unremitting efforts, the population of Asian elephants has increased from more than 140 in the 1960s to more than 300 now.
Since 2021, Yunnan has accelerated the establishment of a national park for Asian elephants, which will cover the cities of Pu'er and Lincang and the Xishuangbanna Dai Autonomous Prefecture.
The national park will be of great significance to the protection and preservation of Asian elephants and the whole ecosystem of rainforests in Yunnan.
