QINGDAO -- From aquaculture to offshore drilling, Qingdao’s marine industries have embraced 5G communications technology to increase operating efficiency and safety.
Haiyan Electronics in Qingdao designed unmanned sailboat for monitoring ocean during voyage. The vessel is mounted with solar panels, which can power monitoring devices to ensure a smooth 5G connection even at sea.
"The sailboat is installed with water quality monitoring equipment and nutrient and meteorological sensors. With 5G, we can extend monitoring areas to about 50 nautical miles in coast and can directly transmit data collected back to the company," said Li Yang, the chief engineer of Haiyan Electronics.
This June, an official from China's largest telecom operator China Mobile predicts that 5G will be accessible to more than 90 percent of China’s population by the end of this year, with 360,000 newly-built base stations.
