The diesel electric multiple units (DEMUs), developed by Qingdao CRRC Sifang Co., Ltd., was recently put into operation with passengers in the section between Alameda and Curico, part of Chile’s national railway, marking that China’s first export of DEMUs has come into service in Chile. With a maximum speed of 160 km/h, the DEMUs constitute the fastest rail train in South America, chalking up a new record.
According to Wang Jingjun, the chief designer in Qingdao CRRC Sifang Co., Ltd., the newly-launched train vehicles are tailored to the needs of Chile National Railway, featuring two power modes, namely internal combustion and overhead contact system, which can switch from each other even train vehicles still run, as well as the hybrid capacity for both electrified and non-electrified sections. Furthermore, sophisticated magnetic track braking technology has been employed to have better braking performance and adapt to local complex routes in a better fashion.
