The city of Beijing has begun bird observation and counting to support wildlife conservation as an influx of migratory birds arrives in the city's wider jurisdiction for their overwintering stopover.
In Beijing's northern Yanqing District, the Kangxi Grassland, located near the Yeyahu (Wild Duck Lake) National Wetland Park and Guanting Reservoir, has become a key gathering point for wintering birds.
As water levels fluctuate, mudflats have emerged along the shore, providing abundant food sources for the birds, including sorghum, corn, buckwheat, and sunflowers.
36 species of migratory birds have been recorded in just one day of observation, including gray cranes, swans, bean geese, red-headed ducks, and black-headed gulls. Most of these birds tend to forage during the early morning and evening hours.
According to conservation staff, monitoring efforts will increase in preparation for peak wintering in mid-to-late November to provide detailed data support for biodiversity conservation in the Chinese capital.
