The Qianjiangyuan-Baishanzu park at the juncture three provinces in east China has had its ecological system well protected under a system of interregional cooperation in conservation over the past few years.
Located at the junction of Zhejiang, Anhui and Jiangxi Provinces, the Qianjiangyuan-Baishanzu park is one of the 17 parks selected as candidates for designation as national parks in China.
In 2015, China launched a pilot program for the national park system. In 2021, the first batch of five national parks was officially designated. In August 2023, the 17 new candidate parks were announced.
The Qianjiangyuan-Baishanzu park is one of China's 35 priority areas for biodiversity conservation.
It comprises two areas: the Qianjiangyuan area in Kaihua County, Quzhou City, Zhejiang Province, and the Baishanzu area in Lishui City, Zhejiang Province.
Currently, there is a great variety of fauna and flora species in the park, including mosses, ferns, large fungi, birds, and mammals. Among them, there are five species of wild animals and plants under national first-level protection and 80 species under national second-level protection.
As the park is situated at the junction of three provinces, it has adopted a inter-provincial cooperation model in recent years. While respecting different administrative boundaries, the park has established an alliance cooperation agreements signed between the parties concerned, and created a working mechanism to promote coordinated ecological protection.
"The Qianjiangyuan-Baishanzu park -- a candidate for designation as a national park -- could serve as a model for the governance of national parks in China, demonstrating the harmonious coexistence of man and nature," said Yang Rui, dean of National Park Research Institute at Tsinghua University.
