During the eight-day Spring Festival holiday, more than 2.3 billion inter-regional trips were made across China, showed official data released on Wednesday.
The total included approximately 96.12 million railway trips, 2.2 billion road trips, 9.35 million waterway trips, and 18.29 million air trips.
On Tuesday alone, the country's railway system saw 17.04 million passenger trips, bringing total number of railway passenger trips for the Spring Festival holiday (Jan 28 - Feb 4, 2025) to 96.26 million, as reported by China State Railway Group.
As the holiday ended, the country's transportation network saw a predictable decrease in overall passenger trips, while the number of migrant workers returning to work and students heading back to school increased.
National railways are projected to handle 16.3 million passenger trips on Wednesday, with 2,083 additional trains deployed to accommodate the rising demands.
Road traffic nationwide has seen a significant decrease compared with the holiday period, with traffic volumes concentrated around transportation hubs, urban business districts, and major highway toll booths. Island tourism fueled a surge in waterway traffic during the Spring Festival holiday. Zhoushan, in east China's Zhejiang Province, recorded over 1.64 million passenger trips from Jan 28 to Feb 4. The Zhoushan-Putuoshan route handled over 1.2 million trips, with averaged daily trips exceeding 140,000 for seven consecutive days.
Civil aviation remains busy, with 18,897 flights scheduled for Wednesday. The first 22 days of the 2025 Spring Festival travel rush (Jan 14 - Feb 22) saw an average of 18,658 flights daily, up 7.99 percent year on year.
