Three-Body, the Chinese TV adaptation of Liu Cixin's Hugo Award-winning sci-fi novel The Three-Body Problem showcases Chinese people's unique values of heroism, said chief producer of the phenomenal drama.
The recently concluded 30-eposide Chinese sci-fi epic TV series Three-Body, which began streaming on China Central Television Channel 8 and Tencent Video during prime time on Jan 15, has attracted loads of positive reviews from the audience, both domestically and internationally, especially after it met viewers in different regions around the world such as North America, Europe and the Middle East.
Bai Yicong, chief producer of the show, said that the TV series has once again sparked a craze for science fiction in China. But for a long time, Chinese people mostly watched European and American sci-fi films and dramas, and sci-fi elements were rarely seen among the Chinese dramas sold to overseas markets.
"This is a work based on the Chinese culture, and in this work, we have presented the ideological thoughts of Chinese people. For most of the foreign sci-fi blockbusters, we can see that they usually depict characters like solitary heroes or superheroes, while in this show, they are all ordinary people who unite together to solve various problems," said Bai Yicong.
Preparations for the series began seven years ago, with the crew closely consulting with science and technology experts and sci-fi specialists, aiming to make the story largely faithful to the original work.
Many scenes were shot on the grounds of prominent Chinese scientific institutes. The team worked on the script for four years and spent 126 days shooting, traveling to many places like Ningbo City in east China's wealthy Zhejiang Province, the capital city of Beijing, and Heihe in northernmost part of China, and creating more than 270 film sets, to precisely replay details of the original book.
The Three-body Problem is the first novel of the Three-body trilogy, which depicts the rise and fall of human civilization and the three-body civilization in the universe, and is considered as a milestone in the country’s science fiction history.
As the influence of the Three-body Problem IP has spread to the entire world, it has also become an important carrier for Chinese culture to go global.
