Digital technologies boost education in China's rural areas 2023/2/20 source: Print

China has been boosting digital technologies in rural schools to be on a par with its major cities so as to narrow the quality gap in education.

In Shimenqian Elementary School which is located in a remote mountainous region of central China's Hunan Province, an online reading activity was held through multimedia equipment synchronously with an urban elementary school. Students in two different places enjoyed the same educational resources thanks to the application of technology.

"We have set up 'cloud classrooms' with many high-quality schools in cities which regularly conduct synchronous online teaching, so that students can have access to excellent courses such as music and science at the same time. The resources are abundant, giving us a leverage to improve rural education," said Jiang Xianglei, principal of Shimenqian Elementary School.

In Xingren Elementary School, Danzhai County of southwest China's Guizhou Province, a dozen of high-quality classes like artificial intelligence (AI), chess and cup song were introduced to advance students' well-rounded development.

"I am very interested in this kind of course, and I learned a lot about AI. I want to be a scientist when I grow up, so that I can make it (AI) help us human beings more," said Wen Teng, a student in Xingren Elementary School.

"In recent years, our digital teaching equipment is constantly updated, and courseware is constantly enriched. Now we can offer a variety of colorful (quality education) courses," said Cai Jinquan, principal of Xingren Elementary School.
