Fuzhou rated as an “annual progressive city in potential”
In the 2025 Report on International Communication Influence of Chinese Cities, which was recently released in Beijing, Fuzhou was awarded as a progressive city in potential.
Jointly launched by the School of Journalism and Communication, Tsinghua University, the School of Journalism and Communication, University of Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, the International Communication Development and Research Center of China Daily, and the New Media Center of China Daily, the 2025 Report on International Communication Influence of Chinse Cities prioritizes helping Chinese cities to elbow their way into the global arena in a vivid and pro-people manner, and is intended to provide a platform for the world to watch and know about China.
With a focus on analyzing the overseas communication influence of Chinese cities, and quantitative research underpinned by big data, the report is designed to resort to multi-dimensional indicators to present the high-profile Chinese cities on the global arena, find out Chinese sub-national stories with unique characteristics, and play a supporting role in putting up bridges and platforms for people-to-people exchanges.
The report has selected “annual top cities in terms of overseas influence”, “annual charismatic cities” and “annual progressive cities in potential”. Fuzhou, Zhuhai, Urumqi, Haikou and Dongguan were ranked among “annual progressive cities in potential”.
As noted in the report, Fuzhou has given play to the role of culture and created mountain and sea views to unlock “the code to international traffic”. Promoting cultural ties against sea and mountain views, Fuzhou in 2024 launched a variety of economic and trade, and cultural exchange platforms, including the Bond of Kuliang: China-U.S. Youth Exchange Week, the “Chinese Bridge” Chinese Proficiency Competition for Foreign College Students and the Cross-Straits Fair for Economy and Trade, to erect platforms for exchanges of thought between China and foreign countries. As for cultural tourism, the “cliff coffee shop” in Lianjiang, Fuzhou, which prides itself on its unique and thrilling wonder and vanguard role in seeking culture-tourism integration, has become a viral sensation, and emerged as a new attraction for outdoor enthusiasts around the world.
