Qingdao is expanding its aircraft maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) capabilities, with Qingdao Jiaodong International Airport launching Asia's first conversion line for Boeing 777-200LR aircraft on Oct 15, marking a significant step in advanced aviation services.

The project, a partnership between US-based Mammoth Freighters and Taikoo (Shandong) Aircraft Engineering Co (STAECO), establishes Qingdao as Mammoth's only Boeing 777 conversion hub in the Asia-Pacific region.

The conversion process, expected to take about 200 days, involves structural reinforcement, cargo door installation, and modifications to fire protection systems. A second production line is planned for 2027, further expanding the city's capacity to serve international air cargo operators.

Meanwhile, construction is underway on a new aircraft maintenance complex near the airport. Its first phase, scheduled for completion in August 2027, will provide maintenance, painting, component repair, and modification services for both widebody and narrowbody aircraft.

Together, these projects will help Qingdao move beyond routine aircraft servicing and develop a more comprehensive aviation maintenance industry.
