SHENZHEN police are reminding drivers to obey traffic rules and drive with care on the Shenzhong Link, especially as heavy traffic is expected on the first weekend after its opening.
Police said that they will be conducting patrols of the Shenzhong Link and using traffic cameras to identify various types of traffic violations, which will be punished.
As there are no public facilities along the Shenzhong Link, passengers and drivers are advised to use the restroom before driving onto the 24-kilometer-long link. No vehicles are allow to stop or park along the entirety of the route.
The Shenzhong Link has a speed limit of 100 kilometers per hour. Drivers should not speed or drive too slow for sightseeing. Driving slowly on highways is just as dangerous as speeding.
On the first day of the link’s opening, a woman was exposed online for parking her car in the emergency lane to enjoy the sea view while sitting on a camping chair with a drink in hand. She even blocked her license plate from monitoring cameras.
Zhongshan police fined her 200 yuan (US$28) and added nine penalty points to her driver’s license for illegally parking in the emergency lane. They also fined her another 200 yuan and added nine penalty points for blocking the license plate. Those added penalty points resulted in her driver’s license being confiscated, and she must now take new exams to obtain a new license.
Police have also reminded drivers to turn on their headlights 50 to 100 meters before entering a tunnel, slow down, and keep a safe distance between vehicles. Drivers should get into the lane they need to be in before entering the tunnel and minimize lane changes once inside. Additionally, drivers should use turning signals when changing lanes marked with dotted lines.
Drivers are advised to expect fluctuations in light intensity when entering or exiting a tunnel, as the changes in light may create black hole or white hole effects, resulting in momentary blindness.
If drivers encounter a traffic accident or sudden breakdown while driving through a tunnel, drivers and passengers must not stay in the vehicle or linger at the scene to prevent further, more severe consequences.
If possible, they should move the vehicle to a safe location while preserving evidence. In cases where the vehicle cannot be moved, the driver and passengers should report the accident site, activate hazard lights, and place warning triangles about 150 meters behind the vehicle to alert approaching drivers.
