Performance groups from northwest China's Shaanxi Province put on an exceptional show of traditional Chinese performances on Sunday at the City of Culture in Tunis, capital of Tunisia, marking the country's first official celebration of the Chinese Lunar New Year.
The event was held at the invitation of the Chinese Embassy in Tunisia. It presented a wide-range exhibitions exploring Chinese New Year customs by showcasing the melodic splendor of traditional musical instruments while displaying other aspects of the country's heritage, such as papercuts and woodcut paintings.
For many spectators, the performances were a fascinating and memorable look into China's most elegant cultural traditions.
"It was very moving to see the Chinese troupe here in Tunisia and the music was really a great moment of escape. It was fantastic. They are very beautiful and very talented," said Malek SeaBai, International Cooperation head at the Tunis Opera Theater.
"Chinese culture is very rooted in history. It's very diverse. This diversity and openness is a source of wealth for humanity,'' said Aymen Ben Tara, a Tunisian spectator.
"It's amazing to discover this region in China through its beautiful culture. This cultural heritage is splendid,'' said Sana Mejri, another audience member.
Several foreign diplomats also attended the presentation and praised the show for spreading art and lifting spirits.
"This culture brings people together, and music is an international language and I think it always brings good vibes around the world,'' said Javed Umrani, Pakistani Ambassador to Tunisia.
The show was just the beginning of the festivities Tunisia has planned to honor the Year of the Loong, or the Chinese Dragon, which begins Feb 10 and concludes next year on Jan 28.
