QINGDAO -- Consumers across China are shopping for all kinds of zongzi, a popular snack traditionally enjoyed during the Dragon Boat Festival, also known as the Duanwu Festival.
Zongzi is a pyramid-shaped dumpling made of stuffed glutinous rice steamed in bamboo or reed leaves.
Despite a great variety of zongzi offered in stores, homemade ones are still preferred in many households.
In one neighborhood in east China's Qingdao, people are making zongzi on their own in a zongzi-making competition.
The event, drawing to it 1,660 participants, brought people from as young as 4 to as old as 86 together to celebrate the Dragon Boat Festival.
"This is my sixth year participating in the zongzi-making competition and I am here every year. The whole community take active part in it. The competition is more than just about making zongzi. It also helps enhance amity in the neighborhood," said Niu Huazhen, a resident of the neighborhood.
The Duanwu Festival is celebrated on the fifth day of the fifth month of the Chinese lunar calendar. People traditionally celebrate by enjoying Dragon Boat races, eating Zongzi and drinking realgar, a Chinese alcoholic drink also called Xionghuang wine.
