The China Open Mermaid Tournament (Qingdao Leg) was recently held in the Qingdao Polar Ocean Park. More than 60 “mermaid” diving athletes from 12 China’s provinces and municipalities competed in the qualifying match, the women’s singles match, the men’s singles match and the team round.

As an important part of the 2023 Qingdao Fashion Sports Season, the event took place in the circular pool of the Qingdao Polar Ocean Park, showcasing the astonishing scene of “mermaid” athletes swimming together with hundreds of fish.

Qingdao, where mountain and ocean resources abound, has long committed to developing fashion sports and lead China in such aquatic sports as sailing and sailboard. Qingdao’s fashion sports have expanded to the blue sea as the national-level China Open Mermaid Tournament is located in Qingdao. The General Administration of Sport of China will expedite the construction of the “mermaid” project and diving training bases in Qingdao, so as to facilitate the fulfillment the China’s target for aquatic sports of RMB1trillion in output value.  (Ma Xiaoting)
