A sizable rare wild orchid population was discovered in the Xiaowutai Mountain National Nature Reserve in north China's Hebei Province in a latest environment survey.
Among the new findings are 20 species of orchid plants, including endangered large-flowered cypripedium under the top class state protection, and Cypripedium guttatum or spotted lady's slipper.
"Quite a few of large-flowered cypripedium was found in this Yangjiaping management area, about 50 or 60 plants, and the species was found also in other places," said Tang Hongliang, associate professor of the College of Life Sciences, Hebei University.
The orchid species has a large belly and a small mouth, much like a bag. The diameter of the bloom is five to six cm, and the color of the flower body is reddish. It is regarded as the most beautiful orchid in northern China and has a very high ornamental value.
The plant only flourishes when it has enough water, well-drained soil, a wide temperature variation between day and night, high air humidity and good air circulation.
