Due to persistent temperature drop, a large amount of ice floes have stuck together in the narrow section of the Shili Longcao (Ten-mile Dragon Trough) waters in the lower reaches of the famous Hukou Waterfall on the Yellow River, creating a spectacular scenery of an icy look.
At present, the section of the frozen Yellow River has reached 4 kilometers in length, and the section is just like a silver dragon winding between the Shanxi-Shaanxi Grand Canyon when being looked from above.
The waterfall still looks as magnificent as ever despite its weakened current.
Many smaller waterfalls have frozen on either side of the river, transforming the location into an icy wonderland.
Located on the border area between Shanxi and Shaanxi provinces, the Hukou Waterfall is the most magnificent waterfall on the Yellow River and the second largest waterfall in China.
The width of the waterfall changes with the season, usually 30 meters wide but increasing to 50 meters during flood season. It has a height of over 20 meters. When the Yellow River approaches the Hukou Mountain, blocked by mountains on both sides, its width is abruptly narrowed down to 20–30 meters. The water's velocity increases, and then plunges over a narrow opening on a cliff, forming a waterfall 15 meters high and 20 meters wide, as if water were pouring down from a huge teapot. Hence it gets the name Hukou (literally, "flask mouth") Waterfall.
