Qingdao's deep-sea smart aquaculture ship harvests the first batch of salmon 2026/5/29 source: International daily Print

The 150,000-metric-ton intelligent aquaculture vessel "Conson No.1 2-2”, which is invested and developed by Qingdao Conson Development Group, recently harvested its first batch of premium salmon raised through the “ship-based aquaculture tank farming” model, and rolled out newly harvested salmon on May 23. This marked the world’s first large-scale commercial production of salmonids aboard a massive mobile aquaculture vessel.

According to Meng Guangwei, technology and operations director for “Conson No. 1 2-2”, high-quality salmonids such as Atlantic salmon are known for their extreme requirements for water temperature and quality, and attributable to the mobile farming model, the vessel can travel between northern and southern waters along China's coastline to maintain ideal water temperatures for farming all around the year. The approach also allows the ship to avoid natural threats such as typhoons and red tides.

With the “ship-based aquaculture tank farming” model, which can well overcome geographical and seasonal limitations, put into place, the time required for fishing premium salmon from deep sea water and delivering them to consumers can be shortened to 24 to 36 hours. This has not only helped consumers to have immediate access to salmon from the deep sea, which used to be unimaginable, but also provided sound conditions to build a stable, well controlled and traceable industrial chain for production of premium salmon in China.  (Liu Lanxing)
